Troubleshooting a Webcast

Here are a number of possible solutions if you are having trouble viewing the streaming test or a webcast.

  • Try logging out of the cast:stream player, then logging back in.

  • If QuickTime is unable to establish a connection for streaming, try changing the transport setup from UDP to HTTP. Follow these steps on Mac OS X:
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click QuickTime.
    3. Click the Connection tab.
    4. Click the Transport Setup button.
    5. Set the Transport Protocol to HTTP with a Port ID of 80.

  • If you are getting audio only and a still frame titled "Audio Only 56Kbs Stream" appears in the QuickTime window, but you are using DSL/Cable or faster, be sure your Connection Speed is set properly in QuickTime preferences.

    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click QuickTime.
    3. Click the Connection tab.
    4. Change the Connection Speed to "512 Kbps DSL/Cable" or higher.

  • If you are using VPN to get behind the Apple firewall, close your VPN connection. You don't need VPN to watch a broadcast, and it can cause problems with viewing.

  • A common misconception is that QuickTime Streaming is effectively set because the videos on the Apple site "stream" fine. The QuickTime movies on many sites, including many on Apple sites, are progressive download movies, and not QuickTime streams. If you are still unable to view the QuickTime video or audio stream after trying the suggestions above, your Internet service provider or network administrator may be blocking direct network access via firewall, and you will need to use a proxy server. For further assistance regarding these issues, please contact your ISP or network admin, and consult this technical support page:

  • If the slides are not timed properly during a broadcast, follow these steps:

      1. Open the cast:stream preferences.
      2. Click the SyncSure™ Slide Delay Compensation checkbox.
      3. Slide the timer up or down.
